Scientist Dr Abdur Rahman Khan

AKM Fazlul Bari :: Yesterday I have been informed my Nephew Opu that one of my oldest friends Dr. Abdur Rahman Khan had passed away on Thursday night and had funeral prayer at MCC mosque on Friday after Jumma pray.

Dr. Rahman as he used to say ‘Engineer Rahman’ was one of a kind on this earth.
During my freshman year in 1963 at the National Technical School of Electronic and Electric,Los Angeles, California I met him first time at the house of Mr. Siraj Uddin, an elderly person of our district in East Pakistan now Bangladesh. Mr. Siraj Uddin’s house was our home away home, so, few of us like Shah A. S. Qureshi, Chemical Engineer who was doing research on Nylon fabric synthesizing to have invisibility. His project was to develop fabric to have invisibility so that parachutes would not be visible when landing to the enemy land during war. It was quite interesting project. Then Aziz Ahmad who used to come with his Anglo American girl friend. Aziz Ahmad was responsible for developing multi stories freeways systems in Los Ageless and State of California. Other person was with our weekly gatherings Mohammad Abdur Rouf. He used to work in a company who produced blue prints for sky scrapers in LA. As a chief drafts man, he guided hordes of junior drafts men in his shop. Mr. Anis Ahmad ,CSP who was studying at USC for Master of Public

Administration would occasionally joint with us for lunch at Mr. Siraj Uddin. An elderly man we called him Mr. Ali who used to do acting in the Hollywood studios resided with Mr. Siraj Uddin. It was wonderful time for us talking interesting things and studies.
Let talk about our recently departed friend Abdur Rahman. He was a student at the Inglewood Institute of Aeronautical Engineering in early 60’s. He was getting his Masters. Once, few weeks went by we did not see Rahman and we were wondering what has happened to him. On the third weekend he showed up and gave us his reason why he was absent in our routine gathering. He explained to us that something had interesting happened to him during those weeks. Earlier month, he explained to us that he had written an article about whirlpool and its velocity and it was published on aeronautical Engineering Magazine. So, two weeks ago his advisor at the institute asked him to meet at the office of the advisor. When he arrived to the advisor’s office he saw a fully uniformed air force man was sitting with the advisor. Advisor introduced him as the General so, and so. The General asked him whether he would like to work for the US Government on Apollo program. In reply Abdur Rahman mentioned to the General that he was only a foreign Student from Pakistan having F-1 Visa to study. The General replied to him “never mind visa, I will make you US Citizen tomorrow, if you are interested”. Abdur Rahman related to us that he agreed to work for US Government and flow with the General in his Super Sonic two seats plane to Huntsville Alabama, NASA Apollo project office then and then. That was why he was absent in our weekly gatherings. However, few weeks later he move to Alabama and worked as Mathematician to formulate the landing velocity of Lunar Mojul of Apollo program. According to him he re-calculated and re-formulated a mathematic of landing lunar mozul. It was his formula through which Lunar capsule could have landed on the moon. Prior to that no one knew what condition was the surface of the moon. And no one knew how to land on it without being crashed on the surface. Besides, no scientist had an idea whether moon was hollow ball of dust or solid surface. He calculated the speed of landing such a way that it lands gently and in case get sinking on the surface, can pull back quickly upward to get into moon atmosphere.

After completing Apollo mission he came to Washington DC as a Director of OSHA of US Labor Department. He got in touch with me and frequently he used to be guest of my wife and me. We would seat down and reminiscent of our LA days and talked about what research he was doing. Beside working at the OSHA, he was doing research on solar power systems through which power could be generated. He calculated depth of water filaments which passes through two pieces of solar panels and generate tremendous amount of heat which could subsequently generate power to run house hold appliances. He showed me one occasion a letter from MIT telling him that they could not publish his article debunking Eien Stein theory of relativity. They told him that their readers would not understand the dept of his formula debunking Eien Stein formula. He was quite angry at the editor of the MIT Magazine. Because he found the error of Eien Stein formula E=MC2. Dr. Abdur Rahman rationalized through his mathematic calculation that all molecules circumferences are not the same, therefore, saying energy derived from square of every molecules are erroneous, since there all circumferences are not the same.

At that point he and I contemplated to launch a quarterly magazine publish.
